Giggly Pig
(Romford) - Old English
The
trip over to Harold Hill, Romford
recently to visit Giggly Pig
resulted in a
good selection being purchased, and
these Old English are certainly
snout and shoulders above their
chipolata brothers...
Giggly Pig were the 2011 winner at
the Maldon Best of British Sausage
Awards, so expectations were high
when we tried the chipolatas.
However although they were just
about OK, these Old English are far
far better!
80% pork from their "home reared
saddle back pigs" in what appears to
be quality skins cooked up
beautifully with no splits or bursts
and tasted very good. A bit of
movement in the skins agreed as the
heat tightened them up, but very
little weight loss or shrinkage was
noted. A firm(ish) sausage, heavy on
sage, a medium texture, easy to bite
and a satisfying succulent chew.
Pricewise again a smidgen on the
high side at £10.99/Kg, but the
great taste and succulence certainly
makes the difference between whether
we would call in or not when we're
next passing and get
some more of these.
I tried one in a sandwich which was
good, and the bangers and mash last
night was even better using these
Old English beauties!
