Totham Bangers - Pork & Marmite

Hmm? I'll give these a go but like the advert said - "Love it, or hate it". I personally lean towards not favouring it if honest but you do what you have to do...Again we picked these up from the most excellent Poplar Nurseries at Marks Tey near Colchester (on the A120)...

I cannot say personally I was looking forward to trying these, and I suppose it was a bit of an impulse buy when I saw them in the display. The family don't mind marmite, but we don't have it very often in things (thankfully) and with a bit of pressure a pack went into the basket. A very good looking pack I will quickly add. Presentation of the Totham Bangers sausages has always been good although the colouring and the natural skins do seem darker than most sausages.

86% with 2% marmite plus some herbs etc., sounds pretty fair. 6 sausages in a 420g pack for £4.99 isn't too dusty either.

Like other Totham Bangers sausages they are quite solid in the raw, but with such a high percentage of meat you may expect that.  Cooked up they browned well with crispy skins and provided a texture of just under medium to coarse with a very good bite as expected.  Taste-wise like the "Beef & Horseradish" ones we tried previously, there wasn't a real depth of flavour. The team felt a bit cheated as they wanted a deep marmite bite. I was pleasantly surprised that with a mild savoury taste, and considering my aversion to marmite, I found them OK.

Talking direct to the nice people at Totham Bangers, evidently they have to be very careful about the quantity of Marmite added to the mix owing to the amount of salt that's actually in the Marmite. Also, because we've been asked, Totham buy their pork in from the well respected Humphrey's & Sons of Blixes Farm, Gt Leighs in Essex. Humphrey's say they guarantee consistently high standards of animal welfare, quality and hygiene throughout.

Shrinkage and weight-loss figures were OK.  Eaten cold later...unfortunately they were all gone...sorry!

The bottom line:   A very good well made sausage with not too much marmite (thankfully) but others may disagree...
