Heaps (Greenwich) - Smithfield Breakfast

Having made the hour and a half trek down to Greenwich to buy some sausages from Heaps, I thought I'd have breakfast in the shop while there.  Good decision as it happens!

I've been meaning to get some sausages from Heaps to try for some time now. I know that you can pick up the Martin Heap recipe sausages from Waitrose (Simply Sausage packaging) but I wanted to try the shop made ones.  After a drive to Epping station then on the Central Line and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) to "Cutty Sark" station, Heaps is "just round the corner" in Nevada Street.

Heap's (very close to the Cutty Sark clipper ship and the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich) retail shop made sausages and similar meat products, as well as operating a café offering sausage based foods (sausage and mash, hotdogs etc), some pastries, with teas and coffees etc.. It's a popular meeting place too from what I experienced with people constantly popping in to chat over tea/coffee and buy sausages. In fact through the glass panels at the back of the shop, you can watch the sausage making in progress...

For myself, I chose a coffee and a breakfast roll with Heaps Smithfield Breakfast sausages which I will hasten to add were delicious.  Certainly the very best sausage roll I have ever had in all my previous years as a working engineer, eating out and about and visiting quite a few cafés! (Quite a lot of cafés really over the years)

So I left the shop feeling really good AND having purchased a couple of bags of sausages too I was feeling happy and fully prepared to do the trek all the way back to the office so the troops could try these too.

The Smithfield Breakfast sausage we're told was the creation of Martin Heap from his many years at Smithfield Meat Market. A minimum of 82% pork (belly and shoulder) within natural hog casings.  The seasoning is simple and taste is mild and slightly peppery, but the texture is beautiful.  We're talking a melt in the mouth quality sausage experience here.  No not so loose that the whole thing falls apart when cut, but a light texture that needs no heavy weight chewing to enjoy. 

Cooked these sausages certainly fatten up.  A little shrinkage lengthwise and a little weight loss but that a side, they looked so good in the pan. Even after three, I could have eaten a few more!

85g before cooking, 74g after.
That's a shrinkage of approx 4% & weight loss of approx 13%.
