Celebrating 10 Years of Sausage
Reviews
When we started our review journey
we had little idea that 10 years
later and just shy of 300 reviews
we'd still be going...We've seen
some most excellent sausage delights
in our travels, and some not so good
if we're honest, but in the main we
boldly go as is said, still
searching for that ultimate sausage.
The family consider me slightly off
kilter, but hey, whatever, it's not
an obsession, honest.

July 2014
Sausage Competition at Maldon, Essex
2014
We were asked to join the judging at
the annual event by the East Essex
Small Holders Group (in association
this year with the Sunny Sailor PH,
Maldon) which is a qualifier where
the winner is put forward to the
National Sausage Awards.
In her very first competition, Emily
Stockwell of Durrants Farm,
Margaretting, Essex, achieved a
convincing win with her Special Pork
sausage. The well attended and
organised event was managed by
Danielle Adger, of the East Essex
Small Holders Group, and she
explained that this competition was
a “blind tasting” where the sausages
were presented to, sampled and
scored by all the people attending.
Marks for each sausage covered
appearance, aroma, taste and
texture, with the points for each
totalled to provide individual 1st,
2nd and 3rd places, which were in
turn collated by the organisers for
an overall official result.
Emily Stockwell was delighted with
her win, and going by the smiles
shown by her and her family of the
result, no doubt Durrants Farm may
well be seen again in further
competitions. In second place,
Humphreys & Sons of Blixes Farm, nr
Chelmsford with their Cumberland
sausage, and in third place AJ
Smith’s of Boreham, also with their
Cumberland.
Other competitors included Gardeners
Farm of Goldhanger, Totham Bangers,
Southminster Butchers, Furzedown
Small Holding, and Meatline of
Maldon.

Sausage Review at the
Colchester Food & Drink Festival
2014
The organisers of the Colchester
Food and Drink Festival asked us to
come along to help judge a sausage
competition between exhibitors.
Musks of Newmarket, Mystycroft of
Halstead and others were
represented. A judging panel drawn
from the audience along with
ourselves in a blind tasting voted,
Musks Original Newmarket the winner,
with Mystycroft's Pork & Wild
Mushroom a close second. Crowds
attended what was a great day out.
The organisers plan to create an
even larger sausage competition next
year.
