Ashlyns aim
is to source their meat as locally
as possible, mainly from Essex or
from the east Anglia area ensuring
high standards of meat quality! 80%
free range meat, in natural
skins...oh yes!
There's a lot to be said about
buying local and Ashlyns has become
a bit of a place to visit for
regulars to not only visit the
restaurant/tea room but also to
stock up in the farm shop, deli and
butchery departments. (I also bought
some venison chops this time
incidentally...seriously good I
hasten to add) I
should also mention the
beauty salon, play barn, fishing lake and a
fine wine store too. Something for
everyone really.
We were impressed with the plain pork sausages
we had before, but these, well, a
really lovely tasting sausage that
gained the thumbs up all round.
The combination of the pork, tomato
and basil was spot on as far as we
were concerned. Good skins
that cooked up really well, nicely browned and made
for a good bite. Succulent,
and very very moreish.
Come on, at £6.45/kg
quite reasonably
priced for a good quality
sausage too.
Now we all agreed that these would
have scored top marks, but the meat
texture was just a shade too loose.
We like crumbly but these were a bit
too crumbly. If cooked on a
barbeque I suspect there may have
been a problem if the skins had
split. Don't get us wrong though
these are a blooming good sausage
and make our all time top ten.
You won't go wrong at all in buying
these.

Note: I spoke to the Ashlyns butcher (Terry) after this review about the crumbliness of the sausage texture, and he agreed the same. He said he would see if they could add a small percentage of beef to the mix to tighten up the texture. We shall wait and see...
