Well it
appears that back in 2010, the
Simons family that produce Broad Oak
Farm sausages, acquired two Suffolk
businesses, DP Meats and Country
Cottage, who at that time, had been
producing themselves quality
sausages, bacon and ham in the
historic market town of Bury St
Edmunds for over 30 years. The
combined businesses were renamed
'The Taste of Suffolk'.*
Now although there is a link
business-wise, it looks like from a
call to Taste
of Suffolk, they produce completely
separately to Broad Oak Farm. If
this is incorrect I'm sure they'll
let us know.
Blooming good looking sausages these
I will say. 75% coarsely
minced British pork, wheat
breadcrumbs, and natural pork
sausage casings. Yes please.
Cooked up following the
recommendations on the packaging
sleeve for "frying" as we do this
for all our sampling of course,
there was no splits or burst of the
cases and very little additional oil
found in the pan. Nicely browned
skins and a fair enough aroma from
the cooked sausage. All in all
looking pretty good.
Texture-wise, quite chunky. The
description says coarsely minced,
and that what they were. A good
succulence but we found the sausages
a wee bit soft. In soft we mean not
at all firm if you squash with a
fork. This gave a not so good bite
and chew, but not withstanding that,
a quite reasonable sausage with good
seasoning and taste.
Given the cost per kilo, the minimum
weight loss and shrinkage, these
premium porks offer really good value.
OK unlikely to be gluten free with
the breadcrumbs used but overall, a blooming good everyday sausage!
Would we buy again? Yes we would.
