The Good Little Company (Downpatrick)
– Good Little Sausages
When
we go shopping I will always
be found lurking around the
sausage aisle in
supermarkets or so it seems,
but come on, you need to
keep aware of products,
don’t you? Well whilst
lurking, I spotted the
packaging of these, and
thought I would have a
closer look.
Did you know that the Good
Little Company give over 50%
of their profit from every
pack directly to African
projects through three
partner charities including
Cristian Aid? News to me, so
I bought a pack of Good
Little Sausages just to be
charitable!
85% outdoor bred pork in
chipolata size casings
always sound good to me.
Chipolatas are not just kids
food, adults like them too!
Very consistent sizes of
sausage too, so machine
produced I would certainly
think. Good looking in the
raw and cooked up, very
nice! For a reduced fat
product, these were still
reasonably succulent and
they say they’re gluten
free, but from the taste,
honestly we couldn’t confirm
that fact!
The skins did brown up a
bit, but they didn’t go
“snappy” like “proper
chipolatas”. Hmm it would
appear these have alginate
casings, which is natural
and purely vegetable-based
product. Our research in to
this says that alginate
provides reasonable texture
and mouth feel…OK, if you
say so.
Taste-wise actually these
were pretty good. The black
pepper, ginger, mace,
nutmeg, pimento seasonings
do combine to give a
pleasing spice. However they
were very slightly rubbery
to chew, and it wasn’t only
me that spotted this, most
of the troops did too.
That’s not to say this was a
show stopper, it just took
the edge off what was on
first impression a
reasonable chipolata.
Now as for shrinkage and
weight loss, a 29% weight
loss is BIG in any bodies
book. If we had grilled the
samples rather than pan fry,
I expect the loss may have
been even more.
Would we buy these again?
Probably not.
So there you go, not our
“cup of tea” but why not
give them a go yourself and
let us know what you think….
