Emmerdale Farm Shop (Darsham, Suffolk) - Pork

We decided to have a day out at Dunwich Heath on the Suffolk coast...you know a bit of a picnic out of the wind, take the dog for a run on the beach, and have a paddle in the sea. (Yes we know its February and on the East Coast and all that!) However on the way back through Darsham (not the route we normally take) we found the Emmerdale Farm Shop...

I did think at the time, how did they get away with actually calling the farmshop Emmerdale? I would have thought there would be some copyright on the name. Turns out there is a connection with the TV Emmerdale. The previous owners of the farm were well connected to the Emmerdale Farm series creator at Yorkshire TV in the 70s, who gave them full rights to use the name. Well there you go.

Now owned by the Thickett family the farm supplies the farm shop direct with beef product and the pork, lamb and poultry etc., is sourced from very local suppliers. Infact the some of the pork comes from the rather well known, and not far up the road, Blythburgh Pork. The butchery, greengrocery and deli is seriously well stocked and is worth a visit.

The butcher tells us that these particular sausages are made from "at least" 70% pork, which is a mix of free range Blythburgh and some from other local Suffolk free range suppliers. Natural hogs skins too and looking good. Containing rusk, so unlikely to be gluten free for those that want to know.

Cooked up the skins worked as they should with no splits and browned really nicely. No extra oil in the pan was noted through the cooking which is good. However we did note that the labelling does show some E621, you know that MSG. We've noticed less producers putting this in over recent times. Infact a local producer to us that we know personally has dropped it completely as the pork he gets in has got as he says "a nice enough flavour so why mess about with it?". A good point.

So what do they taste like? Well a very nice bite and chew. Succulent enough but the seasoning for us wasn't enough. Look it was Ok and we did enjoy them but considering the labelling says spice extracts of pepper, nutmeg, coriander and cayenne, that wasn't that evident unfortunately.

However, for a pack of 8 (yes 8) fairly decent sausages for £4.57 you can't complain really.
