Aune Valley Meats (Modbury) - Pork & Cracked Black Pepper

Our youngest team member moved out and is currently living in Modbury, Devon. She said that the village had some really good local shopping, and the butchers shop that sold a bit of veg and some deli items in the little high street was excellent too. So on a visit we thought we would check it out...would be rude not to, I'd say?

Aune Valley Meats Ltd are a butchery, farm shop and cafe family run business with retail outlets both in Modbury and Loddiswell (see their web site link below for more details).  Certainly the Modbury shop is lovely. It has that traditional village butchery feel about it. There's a deli area with dairy and various chilled products, some frozen foods and fish, and a green grocery area with from what we could see a pretty good range of veg, fruit and salads. Not forgetting the ice cream tubs...they stock my daughters favourites from "Surfing Cow" by the way. Also, the staff in the shop were friendly and helpful I might add and we'll definitely use the shop again.

We don't always announce who we are and why we ask a few questions about the makings, but local pork in natural casing and coming in at 70% + meat is good by anyone's standards! These are good looking sausages. Next time we visit I will pop in and draw their attention to our reviews.

So now to the cooking. I bought a dozen sausages as we had a few mouths to fill, and to be honest we only just had a fry pan big enough!  To cut to the chase, these porks went down really well in a very large sausage and mash early evening feast.

The skins worked really well with no major splits or eruptions from the ends which was good.  There was a noticeable drop of oil residue in the pan though, which did cause a bit of stickiness and burnt (not really burnt burnt) more of a dark residue to the outside of the skins. With careful spatula scraping most of that was removed before serving.

Texture-wise, smooth to medium, and the bite and chew was pretty fair.

Not a bad everyday sausage to be sure. Weight loss yes, a bit noticeable although shrinkage was OK, however for a slight sausage to start with perhaps a bit too much weight loss.

Would we buy again though given what we've sampled?  Yes of course we would!
